Rotaries are their own discipline. A piston-engine wiring plan does not transfer, because the fundamentals are different: two ignition events per rotor face instead of one per cylinder, injectors that are staged rather than matched, and on the FD, a factory sequential turbo control system that has spent thirty years being the most-blamed part of the car.

Buy for your series, not for "FD". Series 6 (1993-1995) and Series 7/8 (1996-2002) RX-7s differ in wiring and connectors. Ordering the wrong harness is a common and expensive mistake, which is why we list them separately instead of calling them all the same car.

Leading and trailing ignition

Each rotor face needs two ignition events, from a leading plug and a trailing plug, with independent timing control between them. That split is not a variation on a piston ignition layout, it is a different layout, and it affects the wiring, the coil selection, and the ECU configuration all at once.

Practically, this means a rotary consumes more ignition channels than a piston engine of equivalent "cylinder" count, and the trailing timing is a real tuning parameter rather than an afterthought. Getting the leading and trailing assignments crossed produces an engine that runs, badly, in a way that is genuinely confusing to diagnose if you are approaching it with piston-engine instincts.

The usual rule still applies underneath: know whether your coils have integrated igniters or need a separate igniter module, and match dwell to the coil you actually fitted. Coil grounds are high-current and fast-switching and need their own heavy path back to the battery.

Staged injection

A rotary runs primary and secondary injectors with different flow rates, staged in software as demand rises. Two things follow from that.

First, injector driver type matters enormously here, because the primaries and secondaries are frequently not the same impedance. A low impedance injector on an output configured for high impedance pulls current the driver was never rated for, and the failure is slow and cumulative rather than immediate — which is exactly why people get away with it for a while and then do not. Check the impedance of both sets, not one set.

Second, the staging transition is a tuning problem that only exists on staged setups. It has to be smooth, and it has to stay smooth across temperature and load. That is calibration work that depends on the wiring being right underneath it.

The sequential twin turbo system

The FD's factory sequential turbo control uses a arrangement of solenoids and vacuum lines that has been maligned for decades, largely because it was designed to a tolerance that thirty-year-old rubber does not hold.

There are three legitimate answers, and all three are fine:

  1. Control it properly. A modern ECU with enough outputs can run the sequential system as designed, with the transition managed in software rather than by aging vacuum actuators. This keeps the character of the car.
  2. Simplify deliberately. Run the turbos in a fixed arrangement and delete the complexity. A considered decision, not a failure.
  3. Single turbo conversion. Removes the question entirely.

The important part is that this decision is made before the harness is built. Option one has a meaningful output count attached to it. Discovering you want it after the loom is finished means rebuilding the loom.

Series 6 versus Series 7 and 8

Series 6 covers 1993-1995 FDs. Series 7 and 8 cover 1996-2002. They differ in wiring and connectors, and a harness built for one does not simply fit the other.

This sounds like a detail and it is not. It is one of the most frequent and most avoidable ordering mistakes on this platform, and it is why we build and list FD harnesses by series rather than lumping them together under the model name. If you are not certain which series you have, ask before ordering.

The RX-8, and why swaps live on the chassis side

The RX-8 is one of the most commonly swapped chassis we deal with. The Renesis has its own port and sensor arrangement, and when it comes out, the difficulty does not leave with it — it moves to the chassis.

That is where most RX-8 swap pain actually lives: the chassis harness, the cluster, and everything the car expects to still be talking to. It is enough of a repeated problem that we build purpose-made looms for it rather than solving it by hand each time:

Those exist because the chassis side is the part that takes the time, and because doing it with a designed loom is materially better than doing it with splices that become intermittents two seasons later.

Rotary-specific misconceptions

"An FD harness is an FD harness."

Series 6 and Series 7/8 differ. Order for your series.

"Trailing timing barely matters."

It is a real tuning parameter with real consequences, not a secondary detail borrowed from piston-engine thinking.

"My injectors are all the same, so the driver config is the same."

On a staged setup the primaries and secondaries are frequently different impedances, so what is true of one set tells you nothing about the other. Establishing that before anything is driven matters, because a mismatched driver kills itself slowly rather than obviously.

"The sequential system has to go."

It does not. It can be properly controlled by a modern ECU. It is a legitimate choice to keep it, simplify it, or delete it — but it has to be a choice made before the harness is built, because option one costs outputs.

"The hard part of an RX-8 swap is the engine."

The hard part is the chassis: the harness, the cluster, and everything that expects to still be talking. That is why purpose-built jumpers exist.

How do I tell which FD series I have?

Model year is the starting point — 1993-1995 is Series 6, 1996-2002 is Series 7/8 — but if the car has history, confirm before ordering rather than after.

Can a Haltech run the factory sequential turbos?

Yes, with sufficient outputs configured for it. Budget the output count at design time.

Is an RX-8 K-swap a wiring job or an engine job?

Mostly a wiring job, and mostly on the chassis side. That is exactly why we build looms for it.
