Ford's two big aftermarket engines pull in opposite directions electrically. The Coyote is channel-hungry because of its cam control, and it usually lands in a chassis full of modules that expect to keep talking. The Barra is comparatively simple on the engine side and has one of the cleanest plug-in paths available.
Count your channels before you choose an ECU. A Coyote runs independent intake and exhaust cam phasing on both banks: that is four cam control outputs plus four cam position inputs before you have wired a single thing you added yourself. This is the engine where "do I need a bigger ECU or an expansion module" comes up most.

Ti-VCT means four phasers, and four phasers means channels
The Coyote phases intake and exhaust cams independently on each bank. That is genuinely good engineering and it is worth controlling properly — but it consumes channel count in a way people do not budget for, because on most engines cam control is one or two outputs, not four.
Add the things every build has beyond stock — widebands, fuel pump control, fans, boost control if fitted, extra sensors you want logged — and a Coyote build can run out of ECU before it runs out of ambition.
The instinct at that point is to buy a bigger ECU. Usually the better answer is an expansion module on the CAN bus. An IO 12 Expander adds four digital pulsed outputs, four digital pulsed inputs, and four analogue voltage inputs, and you can run two with different CAN IDs for up to 24 additional channels. It is cheaper than stepping up an ECU tier, it preserves the calibration you already have, and it puts the channels physically near what they serve instead of routing another twelve wires through the firewall.
A bigger ECU is the right call when you need more injector or ignition drivers, or genuinely more processing. Not when you need four more analogue inputs.
Coil-on-plug simplifies one thing, not everything
Coyote coils have integrated igniters, so the ECU signal drives them directly and there is no separate igniter module to fit. That removes one whole class of mistake.
Dwell still has to match the coil. It always does. A dwell figure carried over from a different coil family is how coils get cooked, and the symptom — a misfire that only appears at high load — reads as a fuel problem to anyone who has not checked. Keep coil grounds heavy, short, and separate from sensor grounds.
Late Mustang chassis are a CAN project
Putting a Coyote on a stand is an engine project. Converting a late-model Mustang to standalone is a communications project that happens to involve an engine.
In those cars the instrument cluster, the ABS module, and the electric power steering all live on the vehicle bus and all expect engine data. Remove the factory ECU and they do not gracefully degrade — they fault. Power steering assist behaving differently is not a cosmetic problem.
The three honest answers are the same as on any modern chassis: broadcast what the modules expect using a Haltech vehicle CAN profile or custom frames via Generic CAN, retain the factory ECU in a limited role to keep servicing them, or accept the losses on a car that is genuinely track-only. The first option requires a Nexus, because Elite ECUs do not get GCAN.
What does not work is finding out which answer you needed after the harness is built.
Barra: the clean path
The Falcon inline six has a deep aftermarket and a genuinely good plug-in route. Worth knowing: there are Elite PRO plug-in kits for the Barra that include an onboard wideband sensor as part of the package, such as the Elite PRO Plug-in ECU for Ford Falcon i6 Barra with onboard wideband (HT-154006).
That detail matters more than it sounds. An external analog wideband controller is a voltage signal referenced to that controller's ground. If its ground differs from the ECU's by a couple of tenths of a volt, the AFR the ECU sees is not the AFR the sensor measured — and you tune to a lie. Bringing the wideband inside the ECU removes an entire device, its ground, and that whole failure mode from the system. One less thing to get wrong on a platform where people otherwise routinely get it wrong.
The usual Elite caveat applies: no GCAN, ever. Fine if your build stays within Haltech's supported device list. Worth thinking about if it might not.
Ford-specific misconceptions
"Cam control is cam control, it is one output."
On a Coyote it is four outputs and four inputs. Budget for it before you choose an ECU.
"I have run out of channels, so I need a bigger ECU."
Usually you need an IO 12 Expander. A bigger ECU is for more injector or ignition drivers, not more analogue inputs.
"Coil-on-plug means I do not need to think about dwell."
Integrated igniters remove the igniter question, not the dwell question. Match dwell to the coil you fitted.
"The Mustang's power steering is mechanical."
On late chassis it is electric and it is on the bus. It expects engine data, and it notices when that data stops arriving.
"An onboard wideband is just a packaging convenience."
It removes a separate ground reference from your AFR measurement, which is one of the most common sources of a tune that is quietly built on bad data.
Questions we get on Ford builds
Will a Coyote swap fit on a smaller ECU with an expander?
Often, yes, and that is usually the better-value answer. It depends on your driver requirements rather than your input count. Send the spec and we will work out the channel budget with you.
Can I keep my late Mustang's dash and power steering?
With the right ECU and the right CAN work, generally yes. It is model-year specific and it is a per-vehicle investigation, not a product you buy off a shelf.
Is the Barra plug-in kit enough for a built engine?
For a great many Barra builds, yes. The limiting factor is usually whether you need custom CAN rather than whether you need more ECU.
