Three Questions Pick Your ECU

Every Haltech recommendation I make comes down to the same three questions. Answer them honestly and the range narrows itself.

Know Your Wiring

Keeping the factory harness? Look at Plug'n'Play solutions: ECU + adaptor harness kits or direct plug-in ECUs. Rewiring, swapping, or building from scratch? Head for the universal wire-in range with terminated engine harnesses, or a Rebel kit that ships with the harness in the box.

Know Your Engine

Cylinder count, rotors, drive-by-wire, variable cam control, flex fuel, knock control: your engine's hardware sets the floor for inputs and outputs. A 4 cylinder on a single cam sensor needs far less I/O than a quad-cam V8 with dual DBW. List what the engine must have before you shop.

Know Your Goals

Street car that starts every morning? Long term learning and closed loop control matter most. Chasing timeslips? Look for race functions: boost by gear, nitrous control, flat shift, trans brake creep and torque management. Running a full race chassis? Onboard power distribution replaces the fuse box entirely.

Straight Talk

Standalone ECU Myths, Retired

I hear the same objections every week. Most of them were true fifteen years ago. None of them survive contact with a current Haltech.

Myth

Standalones can't daily drive

Fact

A properly set up Haltech starts cold, idles clean and cruises like stock. Long term learning continuously trims fuel, ignition, knock response and idle quality in the background, and closed loop O2 control holds your target air-fuel ratio through weather, altitude and fuel changes. Flex fuel support means the car adapts between pump gas and E85 without touching a laptop.

Myth

A standalone risks your engine

Fact

It is the opposite. A factory ECU protects a factory engine. A Haltech protects your engine: lean protection, oil and fuel pressure safeguards, over-temp limits and knock control all watch every combustion event and pull power or shut down before damage happens. Most engine failures on standalones trace back to skipped safeguards, not the ECU. Set the protections and the ECU becomes the cheapest insurance on the car.

Myth

The software is for pros only

Fact

NSP is free, runs the entire Nexus range, and its setup wizards will build base fuel and ignition maps from your engine combination on platforms like the Rebel LS. The free Haltech Connect app puts live gauges, diagnostics and setup on your phone over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You can learn the deep end at your own pace, and a professional tuner can take over the same file remotely at any time.

Myth

Wiring means cutting up the car

Fact

Plug'n'Play adaptor harnesses connect a Haltech to your factory loom with zero cuts, and it unplugs back to stock in an afternoon. Terminated engine harnesses arrive labeled and pinned for LS, RB, 2JZ, Barra, 13B and more. The Rebel breakout system goes further: swap injector plugs, throttle style or alternator type by changing a sub-harness, not splicing wire. And for anything custom, TBS builds harnesses in house.

Myth

A tune is one dyno day, done forever

Fact

A calibration is a living thing. Fuel quality, weather, hardware changes and how you actually drive all show up in the datalogs. Every current Haltech logs everything, and Nexus units extract logs wirelessly. That is exactly why my remote tuning process works: we refine your tune live over Zoom from real-world data, on your schedule, without shipping the car anywhere.

Beyond the ECU

One CAN Bus Runs the Whole Car

Every current Haltech speaks the same CAN language, so the ecosystem snaps together as your build grows.

NSP Software

Free tuning suite for the full Nexus range, with setup wizards, live tuning and full datalog analysis.

Haltech Connect

Free iOS and Android app. Live gauges, diagnostics and guided setup over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on Nexus-generation ECUs.

iC-7 Dash

Full color CAN display with configurable layouts, alarms and logging that plugs straight into any current Haltech.

PD-16 Power Distribution

Solid state power module that replaces fuses and relays. Run up to four on a Rebel and control the entire car from the ECU.

IO16 Expander

Adds 16 configurable input and output channels over CAN when your build outgrows the onboard I/O.

Ti6L Trans Interface

Control for GM 6L-series automatics, programmed through NSP or the Connect setup wizard on Rebel LS.

Quick Answers

Haltech ECU FAQ

What is the difference between the Nexus R-Series and S-Series?

The R-Series (R3, R5) are Vehicle Control Units with an onboard Power Distribution Module, so fuel pumps, fans and accessories run directly off the unit. The S-Series (S2, S3) are pure ECUs without power distribution. Both share the Nexus processing platform and NSP software.

Which Haltech ECU is best for an LS swap?

For most LS swaps, the Nexus Rebel LS. The kit includes a pre-labeled terminated harness for Gen III and Gen IV engines, an onboard wideband, data logger and Wi-Fi, and a setup wizard that builds base maps from your combination. Builds needing onboard power distribution or pro race features step up to an R3 or R5.

Is Haltech tuning software free?

Yes. NSP is a free download and tunes the full Nexus range. The Haltech Connect app for iOS and Android is also free and connects wirelessly to Nexus-generation ECUs.

Can I upgrade from an Elite 550 or 750 without rewiring?

Yes. The Nexus T1 and T2 were built to drop into existing Elite 550/750 wiring kits. Moving from an Elite 1500 or 2500 to a Nexus S2 or S3 requires repinning the ECU side of the harness, since the S-Series uses different connectors with more pins.

Can a Haltech ECU be tuned remotely?

Yes. Every current Haltech logs the data a tuner needs, and Nexus units extract logs wirelessly. Tuned by Shawn runs remote tuning sessions live over Zoom, refining your calibration from real-world datalogs without your car leaving the driveway.
