Haltech Generic CAN (GCAN): A Free, User-Programmable CAN Bus for Nexus ECUs and Dashes
Haltech has released Generic CAN (GCAN), a firmware feature that lets you define your own CAN bus messages on eligible Nexus ECUs and on the iC-7 and uC-10 displays. It is free, it applies to units already in the field, and it is available now as a beta through NSP. This article covers what GCAN does, which hardware gets it, what the limits are, how to install the beta, and the questions we are already getting about it.
Short version: If you own a Nexus T1, T2, S2, S3, R3, R5, any Nexus Plug-in ECU, an iC-7, or a uC-10, you can now send and receive custom CAN messages without buying anything. Elite ECUs and the Nexus Rebel do not get it.
What Generic CAN does
Until now, a Haltech Nexus could only talk to devices Haltech had pre-built support for: Haltech dashes, keypads, IO expanders, wideband controllers, and a list of supported vehicle CAN profiles. If your device or vehicle was not on that list, you were stuck with analog wiring or a third-party CAN translator.
GCAN removes that restriction. You define the CAN frame ID, the byte layout, the scaling, and the direction (transmit or receive) yourself inside NSP. The Nexus then reads or broadcasts those messages on the bus you assign them to.
- No license or unlock fee. If the unit is on the eligible list, GCAN is included in the firmware.
- Retroactive. Existing eligible units get it through a firmware update, not a hardware revision.
- Standard going forward. All current and future Nexus Plug-in ECUs ship with it.
- Works on standalone dashes. The iC-7 and uC-10 can now read CAN sensors directly with no Nexus ECU in the car.

What you can build with it
- CAN sensors on a standalone dash. Run an iC-7 or uC-10 with CAN pressure, temperature, or thermocouple modules and no Haltech ECU.
- Keep the factory cluster. Feed an OEM instrument cluster the messages it expects after a standalone ECU swap, so the tach, speedo, and warning lights stay alive.
- Custom switch control. Map OEM steering wheel buttons or an aftermarket CAN keypad to launch control, pit limiter, boost mode, or any Nexus function.
- Read the OEM ABS module. Pull individual wheel speeds or brake data into the Nexus for traction control and launch strategies.
- Feed a data logger or timing system. Build the exact broadcast a third-party logger, dash, or series-mandated timing box requires.

Thirty frames and two hundred signals covers the large majority of builds, including ones running several third-party devices at once. If you need to talk to a device at a bit rate that does not match the Haltech or Vehicle bus, use the Third-Party CAN option and set the rate there.
How to install the GCAN beta
Back up your current map and configuration before you start. Displays must be key-on powered to connect and update. ECUs will power up over USB in low power mode.
- Update NSP (Nexus Software Programmer) to version 1.48 or later.
- Open Preferences, then Firmware Update Options.
- Enable Opt-In to Beta Firmware Versions.
- Click Check for Updates Now to download the beta firmware.
- Connect your Nexus ECU or display over USB and update to V1.36 (ECUs) or V2.36 (dashes).
- Enable GCAN on the bus you want to use: the Haltech bus menu node (same place as dash and keypad support) or the Vehicle CAN page (where you select your vehicle).
Rolling back: When you create a new map in NSP you choose which firmware version it targets. To leave the beta, create a new map against your previous release version. Beta firmware does not affect your hardware warranty, but it is supplied as-is, so verify device operation after updating.
Once opted in, an envelope icon appears in the top right of NSP. That is the direct feedback form for bug reports during the beta.
Common misconceptions about Generic CAN
"GCAN is coming to Elite ECUs later."
It is not. Haltech has said the Elite platform's onboard memory is already full and there is no room for GCAN. This is a Nexus-only feature. If custom CAN matters to your build, the path forward is a Nexus S2 or S3, which are the direct successors to the Elite 1500 and 2500.
"The Nexus Rebel gets full GCAN."
No. Rebel stays a simplified plug-and-go ECU. It is getting a second CAN port with support for Haltech's pre-built vehicle CAN profiles, which helps on engine conversions, but you cannot define your own frames on it.
"I need to buy a CAN license, unlock, or adapter."
No purchase is required. GCAN is a firmware feature on eligible hardware. You still need the correct physical wiring: CAN High, CAN Low, and proper 120 ohm termination at each end of the bus.
"GCAN will automatically figure out my car's CAN messages."
It will not. GCAN gives you the tools to define messages; it does not decode a vehicle for you. You need to know the frame IDs, byte positions, scaling, and update rates for the device or module you want to talk to. That information comes from the device manufacturer, a DBC file, or your own logging and reverse engineering.
"GCAN replaces the existing pre-built device support."
It adds to it. Haltech dashes, keypads, IO16, wideband controllers, and the supported vehicle CAN profiles all keep working exactly as before. GCAN is for the devices and vehicles that were not on the list.
"My iC-7 or uC-10 needs a Nexus ECU to use CAN sensors."
Not anymore. Both displays have always run standalone with analog sensors. With GCAN they can also read CAN sensor modules directly, with no Haltech ECU in the vehicle.
"Enabling GCAN changes my bus speed."
On the Haltech bus and the Vehicle CAN bus, GCAN runs at whatever rate that bus already uses. It does not alter the bus. If you need a different rate, use the separate Third-Party CAN bus option.
"Beta firmware voids my warranty."
It does not affect the hardware warranty. Beta firmware is supplied without a software warranty and you are responsible for verifying operation, which is standard for any beta.
"Haltech support will set up my custom CAN network."
Haltech has stated that one-on-one configuration help is outside what their support team provides. They point users to the HPA CAN Bus Communications Decoded course. If you would rather have someone handle it, that is work we do as part of a wiring or remote tuning session.

Is Haltech Generic CAN free?
Yes. There is no license, unlock, or hardware purchase. It ships in firmware on every eligible Nexus ECU and display.
Which firmware version includes GCAN?
Nexus ECU firmware V1.36 and dash firmware V2.36, available through NSP 1.48 or later with beta opt-in enabled.
Does GCAN work on the Elite 2500?
No. Elite ECUs do not have the onboard memory for it. GCAN is limited to the Nexus range and the iC-7 and uC-10 displays.
How many CAN messages can I define?
Up to 30 frames and 200 signals per unit.
Can I use GCAN to keep my factory dash working after an ECU swap?
Yes, if you know the messages the cluster expects. GCAN lets you transmit them from the Nexus. Some clusters need more than 30 frames or need data the Nexus does not have, so check your vehicle before counting on it.
Is the GCAN beta stable enough for a daily driven or race car?
Haltech expects the feature to keep improving based on user feedback. Back up your map, test on the bench where possible, and verify every signal before relying on it. Rolling back is a new map against the previous firmware.
