Description

Haltech gave your Nexus a programmable CAN bus. We make it talk to the devices you actually have.

Generic CAN (GCAN) is the free firmware feature that lets an eligible Haltech Nexus ECU, iC-7 or uC-10 send and receive custom CAN messages. What it does not do is decode your vehicle or your third-party hardware for you. Frame IDs, byte layouts, scaling, endianness, update rates and bus timing all have to be defined by hand in NSP, and one wrong byte means a dead cluster or a dash showing garbage. The Haltech GCAN Mapping Service is a remote session where a Tuned By Shawn technician builds that configuration for you, loads it into your map and verifies every signal live while you watch. You supply the device documentation or a DBC file, we supply the working CAN setup. Delivered over Zoom with screen share, so you keep the car in your garage and walk away with a config you can read, edit and reuse.

What We Map

GCAN is built for the devices that were never on Haltech's pre-built support list. These are the jobs this service covers:

  • Factory instrument clusters. Keep the OEM tach, speedo, temperature and warning lights alive after a standalone ECU swap by transmitting the frames the cluster expects
  • OEM ABS and body modules. Pull individual wheel speeds, brake pressure or steering angle into the Nexus for traction control and launch strategies
  • CAN keypads and steering wheel controls. Map OEM wheel buttons or an aftermarket keypad to launch control, pit limiter, boost mode, map switching and any other Nexus function
  • Third-party sensors on a standalone dash. Feed CAN pressure, temperature and thermocouple modules straight into an iC-7 or uC-10 with no Haltech ECU in the car
  • Data loggers, dashes and timing systems. Build the exact broadcast a third-party logger, display or series-mandated timing box requires
  • Transmission and driveline controllers. Exchange gear, torque request and clutch data with aftermarket gearbox controllers over CAN

Typical hardware we integrate: Turbolamik and CANTCU transmission controllers, Zestek steering wheel hubs and keypads, and similar third-party CAN devices that publish a protocol sheet or DBC file. If your device speaks CAN and documents its messages, it is a candidate for this service.

The Details

After checkout you receive a scheduling link and a short intake form. The form asks for your ECU or dash model, current firmware, the device or module you want to talk to, and any documentation you have for it: a CAN protocol sheet from the manufacturer, a DBC file, or a log capture. The more complete the documentation, the faster the session. For OEM modules where no public protocol exists, let us know in advance so we can confirm whether the messages are already known to us or will need reverse engineering, which is quoted separately.

Before the session, your Nexus ECU or display needs to be on GCAN-capable firmware (V1.36 or later for ECUs, V2.36 or later for dashes) through NSP 1.48 or later with beta opt-in enabled. If you are not there yet, we cover the update at the start of the call. You will need a Windows laptop with NSP installed, a USB-C connection to the unit, key-on power for displays, and the CAN device physically wired to the correct bus with termination in place. This service is priced as a single session covering one CAN device or module. Multi-device builds, full factory cluster integrations on unsupported chassis, and reverse engineering of undocumented OEM traffic are scoped and quoted after the intake form. Unused session time can be applied to base tuning at our hourly rate.

Applications

Universal: Any vehicle or engine running an eligible Haltech Nexus ECU or standalone Haltech display.

Supported hardware: Nexus T1, T2, S2, S3, R3, R5, all Nexus Plug-in ECUs, iC-7 and uC-10 displays.

Not supported: Haltech Elite range (no GCAN capability) and Nexus Rebel (pre-built vehicle CAN profiles only, no custom frames). If you are on an Elite and need custom CAN, ask us about upgrading to a Nexus S2 or S3.
