The LS is the most swapped engine in the world, which means it is also the engine where the most wrong information circulates. Most LS swap electrical problems come down to four questions that have nothing to do with the tune: which reluctor wheel is in the block, where the cam sensor lives, whether the pedal matches the throttle body, and what the donor chassis expects to still be talking to.

Before you buy anything: confirm whether your engine is 24x or 58x, whether the cam sensor is front or rear, and whether your throttle body is cable or drive-by-wire. Those three answers determine your harness, your pedal, and in some cases your ECU. Getting them after the harness is built is expensive.

24x versus 58x: the question that catches everyone

Early LS1 and LS6 engines use a 24-tooth crank reluctor wheel. LS2 from 2006 onward, LS3, LS7, and the LT family use a 58-tooth wheel. Select the wrong trigger pattern in the ECU and the engine either will not start at all, or starts and runs with timing that wanders in a way no fuel map will fix.

What makes this genuinely difficult is that the block casting does not tell you. LS engines get mixed, matched, rebuilt, and resold constantly, and a reluctor wheel is an internal part. An engine sold to you as an "LS2" may well have been reworked. The safe move is to verify rather than assume, and to verify before you order a harness rather than on the night of first start.

The cam sensor moved, and so did the connector

On early engines the cam position sensor sits in the front timing cover. On later ones it moved to the rear of the block. Different location, different connector, different routing, and a harness built for one will not reach the other. This pairs with the reluctor question: the combinations are not arbitrary, but they are specific, and mixing an early block with a late front cover or vice versa is common in the swap world.

Cable throttle versus drive by wire, and the pedal problem

LS1 and LS6 are typically cable throttle. LS2 and later are drive by wire. The trap is that engines get swapped into chassis that never had the matching pedal, and people improvise.

This matters more than a convenience issue. A Haltech DBW setup relies on a dual-track accelerator pedal and a dual-track throttle position sensor, cross-checked continuously against each other. That plausibility check is what catches a broken wire before the throttle opens when you did not ask it to. Fitting a single-track pedal, or wiring only one track of a dual-track pedal because the second looked redundant, removes the safety mechanism entirely while leaving the car apparently working.

A DBW installation is only as safe as its redundancy, and a car with that redundancy compromised drives completely normally right up until it does not. Commissioning it properly is a deliberate verification step, not something confirmed by the car driving away under its own power.

Keeping the automatic

The assumption that a standalone ECU forces a manual swap is out of date. The Nexus Ti6L (HT-196002) lets a Nexus take control of GM 6L80 and 6L90 automatics, with a fully terminated transmission harness and a setup wizard in NSP.

Check before ordering Your transmission controller's operating system version. Unknown ones need the binary extracted with a third-party tool before support can be added.

One nuance worth understanding: the Ti6L lets the Haltech present the right information to the factory controller inside the transmission, which then makes the shifts. That factory tune was built around a factory combination. If your engine output or a built transmission falls outside those parameters, a transmission tune is a separate and recommended piece of work.

Late-model donor chassis: the module problem

Swapping an LS into a 1970s chassis is an electrical blank slate. Building on a 2010-2015 Camaro, a CTS-V, a G8, or a late Corvette is the opposite. In those cars the ABS module, the electric power steering, the body control module, the transmission controller, and the instrument cluster are all listening for engine data on the vehicle bus. Pull the factory ECU and they do not quietly lose a feature — they fault, and they light the dash up.

Three legitimate answers, depending on what the car is for:

  1. Broadcast what the modules expect. A Haltech vehicle CAN profile if one exists, or custom frames built with Generic CAN if not. This keeps the car feeling factory, and it is the right answer for anything street driven.
  2. Retain the factory ECU in a limited role to keep servicing the modules that need it, alongside the standalone.
  3. Accept the losses. Fine on a dedicated track car. Not fine on something that still has to pass for a road car.

This decision belongs at the planning stage, because it determines your ECU. Custom CAN frames require a Nexus — Elite ECUs do not receive GCAN, and neither does Rebel.

LS-specific misconceptions

"All LS engines use the same trigger."

They do not, and this is the number one cause of an LS swap that will not start. 24x and 58x are different patterns. Verify what is physically in your engine.

"A Rebel LS can do everything a Nexus can."

Rebel is deliberately simplified and does not get user-defined Generic CAN. It is an excellent plug-and-go ECU for a straightforward build. If your chassis needs custom CAN frames to keep its modules happy, you want an S or R series Nexus instead.

"I can use any pedal with a drive-by-wire throttle body."

The pedal has to match the system it is feeding. Improvising here quietly removes the cross-check that makes DBW safe, and nothing about the car will tell you it is gone.

"A standalone means losing the automatic."

Not on 6L80 or 6L90 with a Nexus. The Ti6L exists specifically so that Corvette, Camaro, CTS-V, G8, SS, Caprice, and Commodore builds do not get forced into a manual swap.

"The check engine light is just cosmetic now."

On a late chassis the modules throwing those codes are also the ones managing your brakes and your steering assist. A faulted ABS module is not a cosmetic problem.

Questions we get on LS builds

How do I tell if my engine is 24x or 58x?

Casting numbers and build year narrow it down, but because LS engines are so frequently rebuilt and mixed, neither is conclusive on its own. There are reliable ways to establish it definitively before you commit to a harness. If you are unsure, ask before ordering rather than after.

Will a Haltech keep my Camaro's dash and ABS alive?

It can, with the right ECU and the right CAN work. It is not automatic, and it depends on the specific frames your model year expects. This is exactly the per-vehicle investigation we do.

Do I need a PD16 on an LS swap?

Not mandatory, but on a swap you are building power distribution from scratch anyway. Deciding to run a PD16 after the harness is finished means rebuilding the harness. Decide at design time.
