Nissan's performance engines span a wide enough range of years and systems that the word "Nissan" tells you almost nothing about what a build needs. An RB26 and an SR20 do not share an ignition architecture. A GT-R has an entire drivetrain controller that a 240SX does not. And on the GT-R chassis specifically, the ECU choice has a consequence most people do not find out about until late.
The one that costs people money: Elite ECUs do not receive Generic CAN, and Haltech has confirmed they never will. There are excellent Elite plug-in kits for Skylines. If your build later needs a custom CAN frame — for a data logger, an aftermarket dash, or a module you want to read — you will be buying an ECU twice. Decide up front.

Coils and igniters differ across the family
This is the fastest way to destroy an ECU output on a Nissan, because people carry assumptions between engines that do not transfer.
- RB26 uses six individual coils with integrated igniters. The ECU signal drives them directly.
- SR20 traditionally runs a separate power transistor unit between the ECU and the coils.
- VQ35 uses coil-on-plug with integrated igniters.
Mixing those assumptions has a predictable result. Wire a coil that expects an igniter directly to a Haltech ignition output and you destroy the output — it does not throw a code, it fails. The rule that saves you is simple: confirm what is physically bolted to the engine in front of you, not what the internet says a car of that model should have. These engines are decades into their modification life and almost nothing is still stock.
Dwell follows the same logic. Every coil family has its own requirement, and it changes with supply voltage. A dwell table copied from a different coil is how igniters get cooked, and the resulting high-load misfire looks exactly like a fuel problem.
Consult, diagnostics, and the things customers assume survive
The factory consult connector, the check engine light behaviour, and the diagnostic ground are not automatically preserved by a standalone install. On a car that still has to pass an inspection somewhere, or that the owner expects to be able to plug a reader into, this is worth settling before the harness is built rather than discovering afterwards.
The same goes for the cluster. These chassis mostly predate a single unified vehicle bus, which is actually good news: the answer is usually a correctly conditioned output signal at the type and level the cluster expects, not a CAN frame. Tachometer and speedometer feeds are routine work. They are only a problem when nobody planned for them.
ATTESA and the GT-R drivetrain
On R32, R33, and R34 GT-Rs, the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system is a separate controller with its own logic, and it expects inputs that originally came from the factory engine management. Strip the factory ECU out without a plan and the controller does not stop existing — it starts making decisions on worse information.
The consequence is a drivability complaint rather than a fault light. The car puts power down differently, feels wrong in a way the owner struggles to describe, and the tune gets blamed for something that is not in the tune at all. On a GT-R this is one of the first things worth establishing: what ATTESA needs, and where it is going to get it.
The Elite versus Nexus decision on Skylines
There is a well-trodden plug-in path for these cars. The Elite 2500 with R32/R33/R34 GT-R adaptor harness (HT-151357) is a capable, proven kit and for many builds it is genuinely the right answer.
The caveat is the one in the callout above. Elite does not get GCAN and never will, because Haltech has stated the platform's onboard memory is full. That is fine if everything in your build is on Haltech's supported device list. It becomes expensive if, a year later, you want to feed a series-mandated timing box, read wheel speeds off a module, or talk to a third-party dash that Haltech has no pre-built profile for.

Nissan-specific misconceptions
"All Nissan coils work the same way."
They do not. RB26 coils have integrated igniters, SR20 traditionally uses a separate power transistor. Getting this wrong destroys an ECU output.
"The car is stock, so the factory wiring diagram applies."
These cars are thirty years into being modified. Previous owners have been in that harness. Verify rather than trust the diagram.
"ATTESA is a mechanical system, the ECU swap will not affect it."
It is an electronically controlled system that wants data the factory ECU used to supply. Ignore it and the car puts power down worse, and the tune gets blamed.
"I can add custom CAN to my Elite later."
You cannot. This is the single most consequential ECU decision on these cars.
"The tach will just work."
Usually it can be made to work easily, because these are pre-CAN clusters wanting a conditioned signal. It just needs to be on the plan.

Elite or Nexus for my GT-R?
If every device in your build is on Haltech's supported list and you are confident that will not change, Elite is excellent value. If there is any chance you will need a custom CAN frame, go Nexus now rather than twice. A free consultation will settle it in half an hour.
Can I keep my factory gauges?
On these pre-CAN chassis, generally yes, with correctly conditioned signals. It is routine work when it is planned for.
What happens to ATTESA?
It needs to be part of the design conversation. What is achievable depends on the specific chassis and what you want the car to do, so it is a build-by-build answer rather than a product you buy.
