The 2JZ has one of the best-supported aftermarkets of any engine, which sometimes hides how much the wiring decisions actually matter. The three that shape a JZ build are: which generation of engine you have, what you are doing about the ignition system, and how much of the donor car's interior you intend to keep alive.
Decide early: VVT-i or non-VVT-i, factory igniter or smart coils, and how much of the JZA80 interior has to keep working. Those three answers set your harness, your channel count, and in some cases your ECU.

VVT-i versus non-VVT-i changes the whole plan
The 1993-1997 non-VVT-i 2JZ-GTE and the 1998-onward VVT-i engine are different propositions electrically. VVT-i adds intake cam phasing, which means you need a control output for the solenoid and a correctly configured cam position input to close the loop.
People treat cam control as optional because the engine runs without it. It runs, but badly compared to what it should do: getting cam control right is worth real midrange torque and a noticeably better-behaved part-throttle character. Getting it wrong — wrong solenoid polarity, a cam signal the ECU cannot read cleanly, or the feature simply left disabled — quietly costs you drivability you paid for.
The two engines also differ in sensor set and harness layout, so "a 2JZ harness" is not a single product. Order for the engine you actually have.
The ignition decision: factory igniter, or smart coils
This is the JZ-specific version of a general rule: a Haltech ignition output is a switching signal, and what it can drive depends entirely on what is downstream of it.
The 2JZ factory ignition runs through an igniter module. You have three paths, and you need to pick one deliberately rather than discover which one you are on:
- Keep the factory igniter. The ECU drives the igniter, the igniter drives the coils. Works, and it is the least invasive option.
- Move to coils with integrated igniters. The ECU signal drives them directly, the separate igniter module comes out. Cleaner, fewer parts, and the common upgrade path — an R35 coil bracket kit for JZ (HT-120200) brings brackets, coils, and connectors together for exactly this.
- Dumb coils with a separate igniter you supply. Legitimate, but you must actually fit the igniter. Wiring a dumb coil directly to an ECU ignition output destroys the output.
Whichever you choose, dwell has to match the coil you fitted. A dwell table copied from a different coil family is how igniters and coils get cooked, and the symptom is a high-load misfire that looks convincingly like a fuel problem. Coil grounds are high-current and fast-switching, so they get their own heavy path back to the battery, never a shared sensor ground.
Keeping a JZA80 Supra usable
An MK4 Supra is not a bare chassis. The instrument cluster, the cruise control, and the climate system all interact with the engine management, and customers routinely expect all of it to still work after a standalone conversion because the car still looks stock inside.
Keeping that interior alive is a communications exercise rather than a wiring exercise. Signals the factory ECU used to provide have to come from somewhere, at the right type and level for whatever is receiving them. What is achievable depends on the specific function — a tachometer feed is a very different problem from a climate system that expects to negotiate with the engine management.
The honest framing: decide up front which functions are requirements and which are nice-to-have, because that list determines how much work the build carries and occasionally which ECU makes sense. If custom CAN frames turn out to be part of the answer, that requires a Nexus — Elite ECUs do not receive Generic CAN.

The plug-and-go route
Not every JZ build needs a fully custom approach. The Nexus Rebel JZ (HT-220205) exists for builds that want a simplified path with app-based setup. The same caveat applies as on every Rebel: it is deliberately streamlined and does not do user-defined CAN. If your build depends on custom frames, step up to an S or R series Nexus.
JZ-specific misconceptions
"A 2JZ harness is a 2JZ harness."
VVT-i and non-VVT-i differ in sensors, cam control, and layout. Order for the engine in front of you, not for the model name.
"Cam control is optional, the engine runs fine without it."
It runs. It does not run as well as it should, and you will not see the deficit because you have nothing to compare against. On a VVT-i engine, cam control is worth real midrange.
"I can wire these coils straight to the ECU."
Only if they have integrated igniters. Confirm what you have before you connect anything, because getting this wrong destroys an ECU output rather than throwing a code.
"R35 coils are a drop-in upgrade."
They are a well-supported upgrade with a kit available, but they come with their own dwell requirements and their own wiring. Fitting the brackets is the easy part.
"The Supra cluster will just work."
Some of it can be made to work, some of it takes real effort, and which is which depends on the function. Decide what is a requirement before the harness is built.
Questions we get on JZ builds
Do I need VVT-i control, or can I ignore it?
If you have a VVT-i engine, control it. The hardware is already on the engine and the gain is free once it is wired and configured correctly.
Is the Rebel JZ enough ECU for my build?
For a straightforward build with supported devices, often yes. If you need custom CAN frames, or a channel count beyond what a simplified plug-and-go ECU offers, you want an S or R series Nexus. A free consultation settles it faster than guessing.
Can I keep the factory tachometer?
Usually, yes, with the correct signal type and level for what the cluster expects. It is one of the more commonly solved items on the JZA80 list.
