Subarus punish sloppy grounding more than most platforms, and they have a habit of ending a standalone conversion before it starts because of something that has nothing to do with the engine: the immobilizer. Those two facts account for a large share of the Subaru problems that land on us.

Check first: whether your car is single or dual AVCS, and what your immobilizer arrangement is. The first sets your channel count. The second determines whether the car starts at all after the factory ECU comes out.

Single or dual AVCS

Whether you have intake-only variable cam timing or intake and exhaust determines how many solenoid outputs and cam position inputs the build needs. It varies by year and by market more than people expect, and "EJ257" does not settle it on its own.

This is a cheap thing to check and an annoying thing to discover late, because it is a channel count question and channel count questions influence ECU choice. Confirm what is on your engine before ordering, not during the install.

As on every platform, controlling the cams properly is worth real drivability. Leaving AVCS unconfigured because the engine runs without it gives up torque you already paid for when you bought the engine.

The immobilizer trap

The immobilizer function on these cars is tied into the body side of the vehicle, not purely into the engine management. Pull the factory ECU out without a plan for it and you get a car that will not start and will not tell you why — no obvious fault, no useful light, just a no-start that sends people back through their entire harness looking for a wiring error that does not exist.

This is not difficult once it is anticipated. It is genuinely difficult when it is not, because the symptom points nowhere near the actual cause. It belongs on the plan before the conversion starts.

2008 onward: CAN clusters

On later chassis the tachometer, speedometer, and warning lights are all driven by messages on the vehicle bus. Without those frames the dash is decoration — it does not degrade gracefully, it simply stops meaning anything.

The answer is the standard one for any modern chassis: a Haltech vehicle CAN profile if one exists for your platform, or custom frames built with Generic CAN if it does not. The second option requires a Nexus, because Elite ECUs do not receive GCAN and never will.

There is a related point worth raising honestly: on a modern Subaru the cluster is not the only module listening. Whatever else is on that bus expecting engine data deserves an inventory before you commit to an approach, because the list is usually longer than the owner assumes.

Why boxer grounding is unforgiving

Two heads, a lot of accessories, and a factory design with a habit of sharing grounds. The result is a platform where ground offset problems are common and are consistently misdiagnosed as tuning problems.

The specific failure mode worth knowing: boost-related complaints on EJ cars are very often ground noise on the knock or MAP signal rather than anything in the calibration. A knock signal is a small signal, and it is being asked to work in an electrically hostile environment. Put resistance in its ground path, or share that path with something that switches current, and the ECU starts responding to noise.

The answer is the general one applied rigorously rather than approximately: ground architecture designed as a whole, with the low-level signals kept clear of anything that switches current. On a boxer this is worth doing deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the factory and three previous owners left behind, because the margin for error is smaller than on most platforms.

Subaru-specific misconceptions

"AVCS is the same across the range."

Single versus dual varies by year and market. It is a channel count question, so it affects ECU choice.

"The car will not start, so I have a wiring fault."

On a Subaru conversion, check the immobilizer before you re-check the harness. The symptom points nowhere near the cause.

"My knock is a tuning problem."

Frequently it is ground noise on the knock signal. Fix the grounds before you pull timing out of the map, because timing pulled to hide a noise problem costs you power permanently.

"I can sort the dash out later."

On a 2008-onward car the dash is CAN driven, and whether you can drive it depends on your ECU choice. That makes it a before-you-buy question, not an afterwards question.

"AVCS is optional."

The hardware is on the engine. Leaving it unconfigured gives up torque you already own.

How do I know if I have dual AVCS?

Year and market narrow it, but the reliable answer is confirming what is physically on the engine. Ask before ordering if there is any doubt.

Will my 2015 WRX dash still work?

It depends on whether the frames it expects can be provided, which is a per-model-year investigation and requires a Nexus if custom frames are needed. Worth settling before the ECU is bought.

My car knocks under boost. Is that a tune problem?

Maybe, and on this platform it is worth ruling out ground noise on the knock signal first. It is a fast check and it is very often the answer.
