Radium Catch Can Kit | 2013+ Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 (20-090X-FL)

Right after a hard pull, the FA20's PCV valve opens and pulls the crankcase's worst directly into the intake manifold.

The direct-injected FA20 never rinses its intake valves with fuel, so every bit of oil vapor the PCV circuit delivers stays and bakes. The Radium Engineering PCV Side Catch Can Kit mounts a billet Fluid Lock catch can on the right-hand side of the engine bay, inline with the PCV valve hose, intercepting the crankcase vapor, unspent fuel, and oil sludge that metered vacuum would otherwise draw into the manifold during idle, cruising, and deceleration. Pressure sealed construction means boosted cars connect to the intake manifold without a second thought. The higher-collecting half of the FA20's catch can equation.

The Details

The PCV circuit's behavior is what makes this can the priority of the pair. When manifold pressure is near or above atmospheric, the PCV check valve closes and the hose sees no flow, but at idle, steady cruise, and deceleration, metered vacuum pulls hard on the crankcase, and immediately after a high load run that vacuum arrives just as blow-by concentration peaks. The can's two-step baffling drops the oil and moisture out of that stream and returns cleaner air to the manifold. Radium's service guidance: check the dipstick starting at 3 to 4 weeks to learn your collection rate, expect the PCV can to collect more than a CCV can, and drain by unscrewing the lower reservoir or by adding the optional Petcock Drain Kit where under-can space allows. Excessive collection is diagnostic information, pointing at ring seal, overfilled oil, or tune issues worth investigating.
