Direct injection means nothing washes the intake valves. A catch can is the only thing standing between the crankcase and that deposit.

Radium Engineering Fluid Lock catch can kits for the 2022 and newer Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 intercept oil and water condensation before they reach the intake. These are closed loop systems that do not vent to atmosphere, so they are emissions and track legal, and they keep oil vapour out of the cabin.

The Details

Note the difference in coverage between the two kits. The PCV kit (20-0911-FL) is specific to the 2022 and newer BRZ and GR86. The CCV kit (20-0902-FL) spans the wider family, covering the earlier FR-S, BRZ, and GT86 as well as the current GR86, because the crankcase vent arrangement carried over.

The two circuits catch different things. The PCV hose sees metered vacuum at idle, cruise, and deceleration, drawing crankcase vapour and oil sludge into the manifold. The CCV line flows hard out of the crankcase at wide open throttle, coating the intake tract. Running both is the complete answer.

No fixed emptying interval applies: check the dipstick at three to four weeks and set your own schedule, noting PCV cans typically collect more than CCV cans.

• The PCV kit is 2022+ specific; the CCV kit covers the earlier cars as well
