The Radium Engineering dry carbon fiber fuel cell lids are optional replacements for the powder coated aluminum lid supplied as standard with every RA-Series fuel cell. Built from pre-impregnated dry carbon in a 2x2 twill weave using 3K tow, they cut weight without changing the mounting pattern; the original hardware from the fuel cell is reused.

The Details

Check your rulebook first. Radium advises confirming with your racing organization that carbon fiber is an acceptable material for a fuel cell enclosure, since some sanctioning bodies require metal. That is worth resolving before spending the money.

Match the lid to the cell you own. Ordering one alongside a fuel cell means it arrives in a separate box for you to fit, and the standard aluminum lid cannot be exchanged or credited, so the carbon lid is an addition rather than a substitution at time of order.

Installation wants care. Use a 5/32in or 4mm Allen wrench on the stainless button head bolts, a 7/16in wrench on the flange head nuts beneath the perimeter bolts, and a micro screwdriver for the Phillips screws holding the inspection plate. Torque the perimeter bolts to 6.8Nm, about 60in-lbs, and do not overtighten anything, since excess load will crack the carbon resin. If a drop-in pump assembly such as an FCST-X is already fitted, follow that unit's own removal instructions, and note a new gasket may be required, part number 18-0015.

Important Notes

• These lids do NOT fit fuel cells manufactured by other companies
• Confirm with your sanctioning body that carbon fiber is permitted for the fuel cell enclosure
• The standard aluminum lid cannot be exchanged
• Do not overtighten; over-torquing can crack the carbon fiber resin
• A replacement gasket (18-0015) may be needed when removing a drop-in pump assembly
