NPT Pipe Reducer

The port is 3/8" NPT, the sensor is 1/8" NPT, and the parts store closed ten minutes ago.

Oversized ports meet undersized fittings constantly: blocks drilled for big oil galleries, thermostat housings with fat coolant ports, gauge senders that all seem to come in 1/8" NPT. The Finish Line Factory NPT Pipe Reducer is the machined 6061 aluminum bushing that closes the gap, with male NPT outside from 1/4" to 3/4" and female NPT inside from 1/8" to 1/2". Thread it into the big port and your small fitting into it. One part, problem retired.

The Details

A reducer bushing gives you two tapered joints in one part, and each seals the same way every NPT connection does: the male and female tapers wedge together as they tighten, with thread sealant filling the spiral leak path the threads themselves leave behind. Seal both interfaces, outer and inner, and keep sealant off the lead threads so nothing breaks loose into an oil gallery or fuel line. Install the bushing into the port first and snug it with a wrench on the hex, then install your fitting or sensor into the bushing while backing up the hex so you don't over-rotate the outer joint. Aluminum construction keeps weight down and matches the aluminum housings most of these ports live in, which also means the bushing won't gall a cast aluminum thermostat neck the way a steel bushing can. For pressure senders, one bushing between port and sensor is normal practice; stacking several starts adding leak paths and vibration leverage, so if you're two or three bushings deep, order the single reducer that does it in one step instead.
