Pull the factory PCM out of an SE3P RX-8 and the chassis stops cooperating. The cluster goes dark, the tach and speedo quit, the immobilizer refuses to let the car start, and the DSC and ABS lights latch on because the modules that used to hear from the PCM now hear nothing at all. The Details

The RX-8 is not one computer, it is a network. The factory PCM constantly broadcasts engine speed, road speed, coolant temperature, throttle position and torque over the Mazda CAN bus, and the instrument cluster, ABS and DSC controller, climate control and body modules all depend on that traffic to do their jobs. Remove the PCM for a swap and every one of those modules assumes the worst. That is why so many RX-8 engine swaps end with a dead dash, a permanent triangle of warning lights, and a row of aftermarket gauges bolted over an interior that used to look good.

The immobilizer is the one that stops builds cold. On the SE3P the security system expects a specific exchange with the PCM before it will allow the car to run, so pulling the factory computer usually means the engine cranks and nothing else. This module answers that handshake directly. No bypass box wired into the column, no security system torn out of the car, no keys left on a screwdriver in the ignition.

From there the CAN Integration Module replicates the messages the rest of the factory systems expect, translating between your standalone ECU and the chassis in real time. It does not care what is making the power. A built 13B-REW, a 20B three rotor, a 26B four rotor, an LS, a K24, or any other piston swap: the module reads live data off the standalone and speaks Mazda to the car. It arrives pre-loaded with the RX-8 configuration, so there is no CAN programming homework on your end.
