Description

Haltech Nexus R3 Plug and Play VCU Kit for 2004-2008 Mazda RX-8 (13B-MSP Renesis)

A complete bolt-in standalone engine management upgrade for the 2004-2008 Mazda RX-8. This kit pairs the Haltech Nexus R3 Vehicle Control Unit with our RX-8 plug and play integration, developed in house to work with the factory chassis rather than against it. The factory instrument cluster, ABS, and electric power steering keep working exactly as they did from the factory while you gain full standalone tuning control over the 13B-MSP Renesis.

Rotary-critical systems are fully supported: the auxiliary port valves (APV), the factory oil metering pump (OMP), and complete control of primary and secondary injector staging.

Built for the RX-8, not adapted to it. Cluster, ABS, and electric power steering stay online, and APV and OMP control are handled by the kit, so the Renesis runs the way Mazda intended while the tuning is finally in your hands.

What's in the box

  • Haltech Nexus R3 VCU, configured for the 2004-2008 RX-8
  • USB ECU interface cable for tuning and changing settings
  • Wideband oxygen sensor
  • 1GB USB thumb drive
  • Haltech keychain and sticker pack

Why this kit exists

Most standalone ECU installs on an RX-8 leave you with a running engine and a compromised car. The cluster stops reading, the ABS light comes on, the electric power steering drops out, and the rotary-specific hardware the Renesis depends on gets abandoned entirely. The RX-8 relies on constant communication between its modules, and it all disappears the moment the factory engine computer is removed.

This kit handles that for you. The integration keeps the factory chassis systems happy while the Nexus R3 takes over the engine, including the APV and OMP control that generic standalone installs leave behind. You focus on tuning the rotary instead of chasing electrical gremlins.

Rotary-specific control

  • Injector staging: full control of the Renesis primary and secondary injector staging strategy, tunable to your fuel system and power goals
  • Auxiliary port valves (APV): factory APV operation is supported, preserving the port timing behavior the 13B-MSP was designed around
  • Oil metering pump (OMP): the factory OMP is supported, keeping apex seal lubrication managed the way the engine expects

Haltech Nexus R3 engine management features

The Nexus R3 is Haltech's mid-range Vehicle Control Unit. It combines a full engine management system, a power distribution module (PDM), a single-channel wideband controller, onboard data logging, and Wi-Fi communications in one sealed IP67 enclosure.

Tuning and engine control

  • Supports 2 to 4 rotor engines and 1 to 8 cylinder engines
  • Full sequential fuel and spark, including leading and trailing ignition control
  • Closed-loop idle speed control with learning
  • Closed-loop O2 control via the onboard wideband (NTK and LSU4.9 supported)
  • Onboard 4 bar MAP sensor
  • Modeled torque tables and 4D tuning tables with 3D compensations
  • Multi-fuel support: gasoline, E85, methanol, ethanol, with flex fuel sensor input
  • Closed-loop boost control by gear, road speed, time, or any user-defined channel
  • Launch control, anti-lag, rolling anti-lag, and flat shift
  • Haltech Traction Control with mappable per-axle or per-wheel slip targets
  • Engine protection with multi-level limits on every sensor
  • Nitrous control with up to 6 stages, wet or dry
  • Auto-tune with short and long-term fuel and ignition learning

Power distribution (PDM)

  • 4 x 25A continuous push-pull PWM-capable outputs (5 kHz) for fuel pumps, fans, and other heavy loads
  • 6 x 8A high-side outputs (200 Hz PWM) for sensors, accessories, and lights
  • 6 x half-bridge outputs for motor control
  • Replaces many traditional fuses and relays
  • Live current draw logging on every output
  • Software-configurable circuit protection

Inputs and I/O

  • 11 x analog voltage inputs (0-5V) with switchable 5V pullup
  • 6 x synchronous pulsed inputs (zero crossing or adjustable threshold)
  • 2 x differential engine position inputs (trigger and home) with adjustable thresholds and glitch filters
  • 1 x onboard wideband lambda input
  • 8 x peak/hold injector outputs
  • 8 x ignition outputs
  • 2 x CAN ports with switchable termination

Connectivity and logging

  • USB laptop connection for tuning and firmware updates (interface cable included)
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for live data monitoring and gauge mirroring while driving
  • Onboard data logging at sample rates up to 1 kHz
  • Compatible with Haltech IC-7 and uC-10 displays
  • Tuned with NSP (Nexus Software Programmer), a free download from Haltech

What still works after install

  • Factory instrument cluster: tachometer, speedometer, and warning lights
  • ABS (anti-lock braking)
  • Electric power steering
  • Auxiliary port valve (APV) operation
  • Factory oil metering pump (OMP)

Frequently asked questions

Will my factory dash still work with a standalone ECU in an RX-8?

Yes. The kit keeps the factory cluster fully functional after the Nexus R3 install, along with ABS and electric power steering.

Does this kit control the oil metering pump, or do I need to premix?

The factory OMP is supported by this kit, so apex seal lubrication stays managed as the engine expects. Premix remains an option for owners who prefer it, but it is not required by the ECU conversion itself.

Can I run this kit on a turbocharged Renesis?

Yes. The Nexus R3 includes closed-loop boost control, flex fuel support, engine protection, and full injector staging control, making it well suited to forced-induction Renesis builds.

Do I need a tune after installing the Nexus R3?

A proper tune for your specific setup is recommended. Live remote tuning over Zoom is available through Tuned By Shawn, so your RX-8 can be dialed in without leaving your garage.
